Joy-Con drift is the one drift with a free repair

Every stick on this site wears out the same way, but only one of them has a manufacturer standing behind it. Nintendo has repaired Joy-Con drift free of charge since 2019 — in or out of warranty, no proof of purchase required in most regions — and refunded people who had already paid for the repair. That is worth knowing before you buy a replacement stick module or a new pair, because the repair costs you nothing but postage and the DIY route on a Joy-Con is the fiddliest one in the hobby: the stick module is tiny, the ribbon connectors are tinier, and opening the shell is what ends your claim.

The measurement is the part you need first. Release the stick, run the check, and read the offset. A healthy Joy-Con stick rests inside about 0.020; this page flags anything past 0.080. The Switch stores its own stick calibration on the console and applies it there and nowhere else, so a Joy-Con that feels acceptable in a game can read 0.060 here — this page never sees that correction, which is exactly what makes the number worth having when you open a repair request.

One Joy-Con is one gamepad with one stick

Each half pairs to a computer on its own and enumerates as its own controller reporting a single axis pair. That is the detail generic gamepad testers get wrong: they draw two stick pads regardless, feed the second one zeros, and report it as resting perfectly at centre — a clean bill of health for a stick that is not attached to anything. This page draws the pads the controller actually reported, names the one it found from the Joy-Con's own id, and gives exactly one verdict.

To pair one: hold the small round sync button on the rail edge — between SL and SR — until the four lights run back and forth, then add it from your computer's Bluetooth panel and press a button so the browser reveals it. Pair and test them one at a time. Joy-Con are notorious for dropping a Bluetooth link when a second one is being paired on the same adapter, and the two halves have separate stick modules and separate wear anyway, so there is no measurement you lose by doing them in sequence. If both are connected at once, the selector above the pads switches between them.

Sideways changes what "up" means

Held sideways as a mini controller, a Joy-Con is rotated a quarter turn away from the frame its axes are reported in — and the two halves turn opposite ways to get there, the left anticlockwise and the right clockwise. Plot the raw pair and every push lands ninety degrees off: you shove the stick away from you and the dot slides sideways. The Vertical / Sideways toggle above rotates the sampled pair before it is plotted, so up is up in whichever grip you actually play in. The offset itself does not change — a rotation cannot change how far from centre a stick rests — so the PASS or DRIFT verdict is identical either way. What changes is that the direction the dot leans, and the signs of the X and Y this page prints, describe the controller as you are holding it.

Joy-Con 2: new stick, unproven on a browser

The Switch 2 Joy-Con are a different controller. The stick is a ground-up redesign with a larger module and a smoother travel, and Nintendo has been explicit that it is not a Hall-effect sensor — so it is a better resistive stick, not a class of stick that cannot drift. Assume it wears, just more slowly, and re-test it the same way. What does not carry over is the repair path: the free out-of-warranty drift programme was announced for the original Joy-Con, and Nintendo has not extended it in writing to Joy-Con 2, which leaves the standard twelve-month limited warranty as what you can actually rely on today.

There is deliberately no separate Joy-Con 2 page here yet. They attach magnetically and pair over a path desktop browsers do not handle consistently, so a page promising a Joy-Con 2 test could easily be a page that never receives a device to test.
