What an Xbox controller test actually measures
An Xbox pad hands its stick position to this page exactly as the hardware reports it. Microsoft's firmware applies no deadzone of its own over USB, Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, so the numbers on the plots above are raw. On a healthy Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox One pad or Elite Series 2, both sticks settle inside roughly 0.020 of dead centre within a second of being released, and the drift check flags anything past 0.080. A pad resting at 0.030 to 0.050 is measurably worn but still inside the deadzone most shooters apply; past 0.080 it will pull your aim in any game that applies none.
Every stock Xbox controller since the 360 has used the same kind of stick module: a potentiometer with a carbon resistive track and a sprung wiper riding on it. Two things kill it. The track wears a groove where your thumb spends the most time, and the plastic pivot ring above the module grinds itself into a fine white dust that falls into the housing. Both shift the wiper's resting voltage off centre, which is why Xbox drift almost always shows up on the left stick first and almost always as a steady pull in one direction rather than a jitter. Hours of use, not age on the shelf, is the variable — the 400-hour mark is where reports cluster.
Before you conclude the hardware has failed, update the controller firmware from the Xbox Accessories app on Windows or on the console. Stale firmware will not create drift, but it does change how a Series pad reports over Bluetooth, and an out-of-date pad is worth ruling out first. Note too that a pre-2016 Xbox One controller (model 1697, no 3.5 mm jack) has no Bluetooth radio at all, so it has to be tested over USB or through the Xbox Wireless Adapter. An Xbox 360 pad reaches this page through XInput on Windows and reports standard mapping normally.
Microsoft covers the Xbox Wireless Controller under a one-year limited warranty, and extended the Elite Series 2 to a full year in November 2021 after the drift complaints that followed its launch. Start a claim from Microsoft's device service and repair page using the serial number printed under the battery cover. Out of warranty, the stick module is one of the more approachable self-repairs on this list, and Hall-effect drop-in modules for the Series and One boards replace the wearing contact with a magnetic sensor that has nothing to wear.
